Jim Rice had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox outscored the pathetic Toronto Blue Jays in 11 innings 9 to 8. The score was tied at 7 after nine. Boston came out on top in the 11th inning. Tommy Helms kicked off the action when he lined a base-hit. Butch Hobson next to the plate and he drew a walk. Steve Dillard then drew a walk to load the bases. Fred Lynn came up and he drew a walk. Rice came to the plate and laced a single. Boston had 18 hits for the game and Toronto had 14.
The win went to Tom Murphy(3-1) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Jerry Johnson(4-5) took the loss in relief. He had trouble throwing strikes and issued 6 walks in 3 innings.
